Lord Of The Flies Cover Redesign

Project Brief
For this project, I created three book cover designs for the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. One will was strictly made with typography, one with images, and another the designer’s choice. This book covers resemble themes and motifs throughout the book. To guide my design, I came up with a core message of the book: when people stop respecting rules (which lead to civility), the lack of structure always leads to savagery.
Typography Cover
Vines crawl up the title, slowly overtaking the lines of text-- symbolic of how the natural man slowly overtakes the boys on the island. Shades of green were used to reflect the island the boys are stranded on.
Texture was added to the background to enhance the design and give it the finishing touches.
Physical Cover
Created with ripped up pieces of paper, the conch (symbolizing civility), slowly evolves into a pig/Lord of the Flies (symbolizing savagery). Texture and earth tones were used to enhance the setting and dark feeling of the book. The same texture is continued with the title and author's name to unify them with the graphics on the cover.
Designer's Choice Cover
Creating the illusion of a conch being apart of the heart, this cover lets the viewer feel that they are on the inside of a design secret when they see the two images. The conch and heart together symbolize the internal battle of civility and savagery that many of the boys struggle with. Red, black, and white were used to create contrast that was eye-catching. With a red base color, this book stands out on the shelves.
