Decriminalising Mental Illness - book cover

Book cover design and vector illustration. The publisher requested a vector illustration of a psychiatric hospital (a photograph was provided for reference, but I also researched lots of other photos of similar buildings). They also wanted a wheelchair added to the front, to make it more clear that this is a hospital, and then a pendulum diagram swinging between prison bars and a hospital bed. Not that unusual when you work in academic book design.

It was lucky that the front apex of the hospital had a triangular feature that fitted perfectly into the triangular element of the pendulum diagram, which helped to fit the two images together. I did have to tone down the colours of the hospital from my original version, so that it was slightly knocked back and allowed the pendulum to be clearer. It looks to me like a mist has drifted across giving it a slightly chilly feel.

The typeface used and general layout were done to match some other titles by the same author (Stahl).
