Climate in Crises:
the AR Exhibition of Young Leaders

ADOBE AR RESIDENCY SHOWCASE PROJECT

Initial Idea: The piece ‘Climate in Crises’ started from a broad idea that there is not enough visual representation of woman leaders in our public spaces. In UK alone among 828 recorded statues only 174 of them are women - around one in five. And just 80 of those female figures are named statues compared to 534 statues of men, 422 of them are named.

I strongly believe that we are entering an era where the positive change will arrive with the rising female leadership around the globe. To illustrate that, I wanted to create an interactive female AR statue where I can place it in a well-known public space and make my statement.
Concept: I wanted this AR piece to introduce some of the young inspiring voices to the viewer, so I had done my research on woman(and girl) leaders. I've researched about Malala Yousafzai, Emma Watson, Sophie Cruz, Yara Shahidi, Sanna Marin, Shamma Al Mazrui, Greta Thunberg and Vanessa Nakate. Then, I decided to focus on young climate activists as I think it is the most urgent issue to be addressed in our decade.
Vanessa Nakate is a young climate activist from Uganda. After hearing about climate crises in her school, she decided to spend a few months after her graduation to raise awareness to this issue. I wanted her profile to be about Africa and the impact of the climate crises will have on the continent; such as disappearing of species, draught and forced migration.
On the other hand, Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenager activist has swept the world with her school strike for the climate change. Her words, and the future she projects gives me goosebumps.  She quickly became an inspiration and a role model for many of the adults in positions of power.

For my AR showcase piece, I decided to create AR profiles for these two wonderful young women and place them in the garden of Natural History Museum in London where children and parents visit daily.

Why Natural History Museum?

I believe, we - human kind - are responsible for the natural history from now on. We have been unbalancing the nature and depleting its resources for the last century, therefore we should be responsible for the consequences that our offsprings will encounter in future. With this thought in mind, I find that creating an AR exhibition about the emerging leaders and their efforts to preserve our nature is worth exhibiting using new media formats in museums. This piece is a little prototype of what could be done using AR technologies, information and art combined together.
