Folktales of India - When Humans Had Tails - Animation

Folktales of India - When Humans Had Tails
Folktales of India is an ongoing animation project conceived by Prateek Sethi, where we create and publish animated stories of the various popular folklore and tales from across India. Also, the region specific folk painting style is used to visually bring life to the stories.

Previously I had done the folktale (The Lion's wedding) for the assignment. This time I selected the abridged version of the Saura folktale from the state of Odisha (formerly Orissa) in eastern India, retold from 'When the World was Young' by Verrier Elwin. The story is associated with the Saura Tribes of Odisha, who believed that there was a time when humans had tails. And it shows the events that transpired into the human race losing their tails forever.

You can watch the film below:
This folktale is illustrated in the style of Saura tribal paintings, which are visually similar to Warli paintings and they hold religious significance for the Sauras. Please find below the final script that I wrote (based on the abridged version of the tale):

The characters, assets, backgrounds, etc were created entirely in After effects. Please check below the storyboards which were created for this film:
Below are some treatment frames that I made using the folk art references.
