The military fortress of Capo d’Orso in Palau is a place where memory becomes nearly physical. Here wars have ended but the barracks, the shooting stations, the arsenals have lived on. How do we transform war architectures into new cultural architectures?

The project of the Mnemosyne Museum is outlined as a story, showing the different phases of war, through a succession of open and closed spaces that configure a narrative path, bringing the visitor right from the entrance, into a sensory experience able to evoke emotions and sensations of a distante time.

The historic relics are linked by continuous landscape elements, terraces and ramps, connecting the entrance with the hotel, to the museum and the memorial. This ensures orientation on the site, though the various structures are combined to form a coherent complex. Rigid columns in the pathway represent the souls lost in the military conflicts.

New volumes have been created adjacent to or overhead the existing structures, through a non-invasive approach of reuse and re-functioning of the existing rural context.
