Bringing a XIII Century Medieval House to Life

Bringing a XIII Century Medieval House to Life
This two-months project carried out in collaboration with the Grupo de Investigación en Patrimonio Construido from the Basque Country University was a journey through time.
The result is a short 3D movie which emerges us in the village of Portilla (North of Spain) around the XIII century and allow us to discover a medieval house and its interior. It gives a glance at what life would have been like for a farmer family at the time.
All the elements displayed are supported by archeologic hypothesis. José Luis Solaun was the referent archaeologist for this project and Pablo Serrano Basterra, the 3D expert. I highly thank them for their support. If you want to know more about the research work behind this video and the general making-off, head up to the project description just below the video link.

Making-off
In this section, I'll rapidly describe the research work behind the project and the making-off of the video
Medieval house remains in Portilla, North of Spain
The first step of this project was to design the medieval house structure in a 3D model through Blender. This design is based on the ruins that are present in Portilla village and the illustration sign that is already present on the site.
Then the materials were applied to the 3D model created.
Once the house was designed, I started to create the objects that would be incorporated inside the house. To do so, I based myself upon the archeologic remains of ceramics that were encountered in Portilla. For the other objects that could not be conserved through time, it was a dynamic researching with the archeologist to determine what would have been the most likely objects to be present.
I then disposed all the objects inside 3D house model and it was time to design the surroundings. In Portilla, houses were organized in a terrace setting and were surrounded by small vegetable gardens and fruit trees. I aimed at recreate this atmosphere. Finally, characters and animals were added in frozen poses.
At this time of the work, all the 3D modeling was finished. I made a storyboard to have a precise idea of what would be the different scenes. Then, I animated the cameras to produce them. Subtitles were added at postproduction.

Thanks a lot for reading the process, hope it was interesting!
