My first mad-lib was colorful aliens wearing headphones in the clouds. In this project we were asked to use all brushes. First I found an image of clouds online and make a brush in order to make my back ground. Next, I added an alien brush I found online and placed them around on the clouds. Because we are only aloud to uses brushes I wanted it to appear the aliens were moving so I turned down the opacity and dragged the brush away from the alien.
I wanted to make the background a little more interesting than just the blue and white clouds, so I took off all the layers and began to add faint music notes in random spots. My mad-lib is aliens wearing headphones, so I wanted music notes to be surrounding the aliens, showing they were listening to music. My goal was to be able to see the music notes, but not take away from seeing the clouds. I was still struggling to make the background look as I wanted at this point.
I continued to work on the background of my piece, but decided to place very small music notes in various colors all over instead. I ended up liking what I had created as the background although I had covered up the clouds. I then added two more aliens, the green and red, because I had some empty space that needed to be filled. I also had an idea earlier to add planes into my piece because of being in the clouds and I made them a darker color in order to stand out.
Next, I extended the shadows of some of the aliens to fill some extra space and emphasize that they were moving. I had some addition space in the top right so I added one more teal-green alien and made it look similar to the others. I made all the aliens different colors because in my mad-lib I said "colorful" aliens, and I think the different colors make the piece more interesting. I decided that I wanted to change something about the planes and so I made the one of the bottom a little smaller and ended up liking it like that.
Lastly, I added the headphones to each of the aliens. I made the headphones black in order to easily be seen on each of the aliens heads. Because I had covered up the clouds with the music notes in the background, I decided to add some faint white clouds all over to appear as if the aliens were standing on them. Also, I added shadows in some spots like near the planes and on the clouds in order to make the piece look more realistic.
Final for 1st mad-lib:
My next mad-lib was dogs pulling sledges in the stars. I wanted to incorporate a planet within the stars in this piece. I found a really cool planet off of unsplash and changed the color to pink, then I duplicated the planet and put a yellow planet on top of the pink. I made the background black with stars and added an astronaut in space.
I had an idea to make the planet rainbow and look as if it were expanding, but I ended up changing this completely. I did not think that it looked as I imagined and as you will see went back to the single planet. I also experimented with the stars and added a pink tint and a different brush, but did not really like how it looked either.
I ended up going back to the single pink and yellow planet, but decided to position it at the top of the page instead of the side. I struggled in where to place the dogs running so I put a white road which looked as if it were coming out of the planet. I wanted to make it look like the road lead to a tunnel so I added something at the end of the path. I also added some clouds in the right area of the piece because I thought it looked boring with the background all black.
I continued to experiment with different colors for the planet and background of this piece. I decided to put a layer behind the dogs that was a single color so that the brush would stand out more and you could see all the dogs clearly. I first started with a teal, blue then as you can see changed it to a green color. I thought that I had a lot of empty space in the background of the image on the left so I tried to add some design to the corner as seen on the right.
I did not like the design that I added above in the corner of my image. To me it looked out of place and so I decided to just add another planet to the empty space of my image. Lastly, I changed the back layer of the dogs white to stand out more, but not clash with all the other colors in my image.
Final for 2nd mad-lib:
My next mad-lib is a huge dog painting by the mountains. I started this off by finding grass and a mountain off of the internet and transforming them into brushes. Then I add a black and white dog and easel.
Next I darken the dog and easel because they were pretty light before. I wanted them to stand out in the picture. Then I added a starry background and made the mountains pink. At this point I envisioned the dog and easel staying black and then making the rest of the piece bright colors. I added some yellow trees to the side of the dog as well.
Next I enlarged the dog and the easel by duplicating the brush layer and added some more yellow trees in order to fill some empty space. I also decided to add clouds in the sky and grass at the edge of the mountain. I didn't really like the piece at this point because I felt like it was very boring. I wanted to add something to make it more interesting to look at as a whole.
I finally had an idea to incorporate some black and white while still keeping some bright colors in the piece. I cut out a circle and made everything outside of that circle black and white. I also put an effect on the grass layer and ended up keeping it. I think it made the piece a lot more interesting.
Lastly, I added one more circle surrounding the dog and the easel because they are the focus of this piece. I made the background of the circle white in order to contrast it with the black dog and easel.
