Lendlease is an organisation that works to better the lives of individuals within the community who face housing difficulty through a number of means. Lendlease partnered with QUT in an effort to explore human centred design opportunities that could support the families facing homelessness and related issues within the Logan area. With the intention of addressing such a complex and layered situation, the DYB102 subject group was divided into five person teams and given the task of researching this issue from an unique perspective and presenting a design solution to assist the homeless community of Logan to Lendlease.

The Problem

The Inside and Out design team (group 17) decided to focus its efforts on individuals in their late teens and early twenties who's families have struggles with homelessness within the Logan area. Collaborative research within the group demonstrated how individuals from families who have and continue to experience homelessness lacked essential criteria such as a permanent residential address, a private phone number, email address and access to a bank account, that are needed when building a stable future as a young adult. With this issue in mind the team began a system that could provide young people within the Logan community whose families had previously experienced homelessness with the tools required to create a more stable future for themselves and their families.
The Solution
With the specific needs of the homeless community of Logan in mind, the Inside and Out team (17) presented their solution in the form of the Future Pass Program to Lendlease. The Future Pass Program is a two part system funded and operated by Lendlease. The program assists youth and young adults from homeless families within the Logan area to access employment and/or other essential services by providing them with a permanent residential address and a basic financial platform. The process is to begin when an individual signs up for the program through a Lendlease representative situated at various community centres through the Logan area. The user will be provided with a PO box located with the community centre with which then can receive official correspondence and use as a permanent address when applying for work or government services. The user can also sign up for a Future Pass bank card if they are not able to access other traditional banking services. This will provided users with a means of receiving payments from government organisations such as Centrelink and provide them with a formally recognised account that they can provide to potential employers to improve their likelihood of finding stable work.

Meaningful Impact
Both aspects of the Future Pass program provide stability to young people whose lives are in a constant state of uncertainty as a result of homelessness within their family. A permanent address and recognised bank account will allow users to access government welfare and improve their chances of finding employment by providing them with the essential information that is often required by potential employers. In the end the Future Pass Program will provide a stable foundation to young people from families experiencing homelessness and allow them greater opportunity to build a stable and productive future.
