Tempo chairs
// A chair created for Cafe Klint, situated in Design Museum Denmark. The concept consists of three chairs with different expressions of tempo- slow, medium and fast. Through form and expression the chairs guide customers to a part of the space depending on what they order and how long they should stay.  //

The cafe is situated in a narrow, rectangular room which also acts as a passageway to other rooms in the museum. The space was analyzed subject to movement of customers, areal, light and workflow of staff. This divided it into three tempo zones - fast, medium and slow.

These tempo are translated into three chairs, each expressing a tempo - fast, medium, slow, expressed with different thickness, height, depth and tilt.
Sketch & 1.5 experiments

The tempo expressions of the chairs aim to emphasize the different tempos and atmospheres in the room, indirectly directing customers to an area depending on what they order. This aims to unconsiously nudge customers to enjoy their stay, but leave when they’re finished, creating space for new customers in the small cafe space.

‘Fast’ chair_ With thin dimensions and a higher seat it expresses lightness and agility. In a semi-upright position with a low backrest, it looks as if the user is on the move. Easily accessible in the room and located in a high energyzone, the user is alert to the surroundings in motion. Comfortable for a coffee, possibly something easy to eat, but does not invite to sit back and relax.

‘Medium’ chair_ A dining chair with a straight backrest and armrests. Placed in the middle of the room with lower light and calmer energy, but with passing guests close by, the user is drawn by the passing energy.

‘Slow’ chair_ A dining chair with a deep seat, larger dimensions and a backwardsleaning backrest for a stable and soft expression, it can be associated with a loungechair. Located by the backwalls of the room where the medium zone and furniture must be passed it’s in a calmer zone inviting to relax.
