Muslin Faux Fur

This piece is inspired by Simmel’s theory that fashion is based on imitation and class differentiation.  In our society lower classes are constantly trying to coexist with high society by imitating them.  The same instance exists in nature.  The hummingbird moth has evolved to look, move, and sound like a humming bird in order to deceive its prey.  Humans living in established societies tend to take on these same instincts.  I have conceptualized this theory by taking muslin, a plain, cheap fabric, and manipulating it to emulate fur, a lush, expensive material.  From this new fabric I constructed a cape.  I wanted to create a simple, easily recognizable garment.  Fur capes have been seen throughout history as status symbols.  Most people associate it with royalty or wealth.  What the viewer sees (and feels) is a soft fur caplet when in actuality it is just tattered and frayed pieces of muslin.
