The following are splash page illustrations done for a horror graphic novel aimed at young adults. 

My illustration process usually involves a series of tests for picture composition, lighting and colours before the final layout is sketched. After this the layout is traced and fully drawn in graphite and then inked with micron pigma pens before being painted. I primarily use watercolours and gouaches for my painting.

I tested the composition with skulls but abandoned it as I thought it took too much focus off the main character in a pivotal moment in the story.
