EFFECTS PROCESS
For the wires, I tried setting them as active rigid bodies but there were too many of them that it caused my laptop to lag and maya kept crashing. I decided to use dynamic curves instead so I created joints for the wires and used spline to get the wire to follow the dynamic curve.
I set the electric poles (the entire group of the mesh) as active rigid bodies and added air solvers for them. I also had them hit a cube mesh to make the illusion of them bouncing back in the wind. Then I hid the primary visibility of the cube.
I made the 3d container larger and then parented the emitters to the curves so that the smoke follows the swaying wires.
Same as the smoke, I parented the emitter for the sparks to the curves. I used nParticles for the sparks and set the mesh to streaks. Since Arnold can’t render streak particles, I used Maya Hardware and rendered them out as exr files.
I created 3D smoke and 2D smoke for the robot. I chose 2D so that I could make a more controlled thin smoke and the 3D smoke is to give it some volume.
For the liquid, I tried using blobby surface but it looked really ugly so I switched to Bifrost. At first, I tried to adjust the attributes for Bifrost to achieve the dripping effect but it ended up making the water look choppy. So, I redid the Bifrost liquid, adjusted the attributes a little bit and then keyframed the continuous emission to create the dripping effect.
Once rendered out, I did some colour correction in After Effects so that the final output doesn’t look raw.
Mapped the Z layer using levels instead of exposure. I also had to pre-compose the Z layer in order for my Camera lens blur to work.
Lastly, combined everything together for the render passes, except shadow_matte because the rendered file had issues.
