It feels like two different worlds: the contrast between Mainland China and Hong Kong. I had been to Hong Kong many times in my former life for business purposes. However, in 2017 my trip to Mainland China was my first. Despite visiting some major cities on the mainland, such as Shanghai and Beijing, I still felt noticeable differences between the two countries in culture, ideals and feelings.

There is little doubt in my mind that China is a nation that is extremely difficult to understand as an outsider. There is a complex history, complex politics and complex relationships with the rest of the world. While you can see this in today's news, I also had the unique experience of studying the nation's history and politics as part of my college degree. While no nation is immune from complexity, China just seems more polarizing.

When I revisited my photographs and hit the editing bay, it just felt natural to use rich black and whites for the shots from Mainland China and to show Hong Kong in its vibrant colors. I know my shooting environment played a part in this: when I visited Mainland China it was cold and drab. However, the choice to go black and white also displays the emotions I felt when I was behind the camera in both places. It brings me back and reminds me of what I was seeing and feeling and the contrasts that existed between the two places. However, in my mind black and white photography can be just as beautiful as color (if not more) in the right environments and applications. I like the way these turned out.

There is no doubt that both China and Hong Kong are unique and incredible in their own ways. Seeing some of China's historical sights was the thrill of a lifetime - The Great Wall had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I truly hope I have the opportunity to return someday (when the weather is warmer) and to expand my perspectives. In the meantime, I am hopeful that the clashes between the two nations playing out in today's headlines have a peaceful and meaningful resolution that the whole world can applaud...
