Garamond Type Specimen Book

This 8x8 book outlines some of the rich history behind Garamond as well as dives into the intricacies and nuances that make Garamond the typeface of imagination. Storybooks are often printed in Garamond one of the most notable being the Harry Potter series. Using only one color other than black grounds my design to the roots of Garamond while also giving it a modern clean look.
Writing copy for a typeface so well known and well liked was a bit of a challenge but with that challenge comes a lot fun. Showing off what makes Garamond beautiful such as it oblique stress can be accomplished by creating a visually interesting diagram
Garamond was redrawn many Times by different type foundries. Displaying each new version of it shows not only the difference between each but, the underlying structure as well.
A lot was going on in the world during the creation of Garamond. Much like fashion designers, type designers are influenced by the world around them. This influence can come form many places and has a direct impact on the designers work.
Both the glyphs and serifs of Garamond show the uniqueness of the typeface. Each weight being laid over the next to show the subtle difference within each one. Garamond reflects the touch of a human hand by its slanted serifs and changing stroke weight. Turing it into the humanist typeface it is today.
