The concept of a share house revolves around being able to live in harmony. Having gradation as our floor plate limited how connected the inhabitants of our share house can be therefore we tried to counter that by minimum use of dividing walls. Specifically on the first floor, the lack of walls connected the whole space as one open room, allowing the inhabitants to be able to see into the living room from the kitchen while still keeping a sense of intimacy in certain areas such as the dining room and lounge. This was achieved by lowering the level of the floor plates of said rooms.
Movement and accessibility was another problem that revealed itself very early into the project. Having 2 void in the centre, we decided to create a central axis of vertical movement which coincidentally became an axis of symmetry as well.
Although connection and relatability is a key aspect of a share house yet humans are entitled of privacy. Opposed to most of the floor plan which is quite open, right as you enter the second floor landing you find yourself surrounded by walls (countered with the high ceiling to prevent any sense of confinement) already hinting at the program of this floor.
