Tree walk (7-part performance walk)
No New Idols performance festival

Reflecting on the festival themes, this performance walk draws inspiration from the tree as the “Old Idol” from which we can learn the shared sense of community across species and borders. The diverse performances of the walk all make us look at the trees differently, with more empathy, connecting us with them. Looking at their roots encourages us to acknowledge our own roots and heritage. By looking at the varied tree trunks and barks, it makes us wonder about our own similarities and differences in our skin colour and our size. And by looking at their crowns we can learn more about the intertwining between the tree and human in our commonly inhabited environment. These performances see trees not only as biological beings but also as cultural entities, exploring concepts such as the tree of knowledge and the Deleuzian rhizome networks as well as the tree in the context of climate change and the pagan heritage that is still very much present in Latvian tradition and way of life. The Tree Walk places the old heritage in contemporary context where sustainable connections with the environment are appreciated, and neo-liberal, colonial values questioned. It is an exploration of our contemporary relationship with nature by looking at how trees inhabit the urban environment. This walk is a journey into contemporary rituals reinventing our connection with nature.

Anastasia Shneps-Shneppe: 'In my part the kinship between human and plant life seems to take the central stage. Being cut off from my place of origin, all I can share is a lack of roots. In the course of the performance, I materialized this absence by taking alginate casts from the protruding part of the tree roots and offering them to the audience to hold’

‘Отвечая теме фестиваля, эта перформативная прогулка черпает
вдохновение у дерева как ‘старого идола’, от которого мы можем
научиться жить в сообществе с другими видами. Прогулка состоит из
7 перформансов, каждый из которых предлагает участникам
посмотреть на деревья под необычным углом, почувствовать связь
с ними. Пристальное внимание на корни побуждает нас вспомнить
собственное рождение. Глядя на своеобразие стволов и коры, мы
начинаем задумываться о наших собственных различиях в размерах
и цвете кожи. [...] В рамках прогулки деревья рассматриваются не
только как биологические виды, но и как культурные сущности, через
исследование таких понятий, как Древо Познания и Делезовские
ризомы, а также в контексте изменения климата и языческого
наследия, которое все еще живо в латвийской традиции и образе
жизни. Перемещение по городу, от перформанса к перформансу, от
дерева к дереву, помещает старое наследие в современный контекст,
где ценятся устойчивые связи с окружающей средой и ставятся под
сомнение неолиберальные колониальные ценности. [...] Эта прогулка-
путешествие в современные ритуалы, заново открывающие нашу
связь с природой’

'В центре внимания — родство между человеческой и растительной
жизнью. Будучи отрезанной от своего места происхождения, все, чем
я могу поделиться — это нехваткой корней. В процессе перформанса
я материализовала отсутствие, снимая слепки с выступающей из-под
земли части корней и предлагая подержать их зрителям’
