'Is this our new home?' animals are wondering looking at the man made plantations and fields. Western ghats of India, is known for having millions of different species of flora and fauna. But due to the illeagal expansion of farm lands and replacement of natural forest by fenced government acacia plantations, the natural forest is depleting. Unfortunately, all of these looks bright green in satellite images. So, this issue is not much botherd. But it really matters to the fauna. As their habitat is being replaced, they enter farm lands and villages for food and water which inturn leads to their death as they are dangerous and also a big threat to the crops financially. This is what happened in Kerala - death of a pregnant elephant. Not only there, entire western ghat belt has this issue in recent times. Many of the cases are not followed.
I really feel, man and animal conflict directly arises here. If we start expanding our territories, enchrocing their land, where will they go? how will they survive?
Lion tailed macaque which is only found in western ghats is critically endangerd. Apart from this, many elephants, stags, wild boars and buffalos are endangered. Habitat loss is the major concern here. And all of this is happening for our economy. Do we really have to choose economy over nature? We keep forgetting that 'Every animal has equal right to live peacefully'.
