Dilla & Donuts

Dilla & Donuts
Dilla & Donuts - So I was given a task to turn my love for a favourite artist into picture book with minimal words. So when Hiphop was first emerging it was very DIY, so i made the illustration appearance of the book very DIY style to emulate that notion. It was then taken a step further by creating a reference per page in order to match the scene I was depicting. Lastly J Dilla loved doughnuts and in America they spell doughnuts like donuts, hence the spelling. Enjoy
Turn Me Up Some - I'd been getting into art alot at this stage of my life, I was staying after college hours to put more hours into my art. So when one day I was on my late pursuits and my friend Jae was listening to music as he was working and introduced me to J Dilla. I loved the song I heard yet I couldn't empathise with Jae's love for him, until I went away listened to some more J Dilla & decided to Turn Him Up Some, then I started to know J Dilla through his music.
Fall In Love - So I didn't really realise what was going on at the time of when Jae had introduced me to Dilla, as I'm an Aquarius when we are focused on something we tend to get quite obsessive about it. I got obsessive about J Dilla's music by this point, I would spend hours working on J Dilla's work listening to his music as I was drawing my own oil pastel or pencil drawings. As I would draw and have his music playing in the back it would motivate further to carry on my work and I would start to instinctively have a greater understanding to depths of production of his work and other producers on my path.
There Is Nothing Like This - So deeper in my Dilla and producers-alike-obsession, I spent further time working and listening to J Dilla to the point I would just meditate listening to his beats. In order to really engage with his aura as an artist and to learn more about the musical decisions he made as an artist when he was making his work. This made him more authentic as you would be always able to tell when you were listening to Dilla beat or song.
The Red - I remember my college mates discussing this song and learning more about the hype behind this song, when I finally listened to it. I was completely memorised by how hypnotic it was as a song, I then started to get religious with listening to it as I might happen to be working on something red and I would play it on repeat.
Last Donut of the Night - So I hadn't spent time actually researching on his life by the first few months of my J DIlla discovery, I just happened to want to tweet about my appreciation for J Dilla, then I discovered that he passed away. I had gone on Twitter seen the #RIPJDilla tweets and started to put two and two together. I also had a sweet tooth for doughnuts and biscuits, so once I had found out the news that was my last doughnut of the night.
In The Streets - I was enjoying listening to J Dilla still despite what I knew, I guess your love for some musicians increases once you find out they've died however it was great to bump into and meet people who still found J Dilla a legend. So I when I got my new bike, I would listen to his music sometimes in the streets so this is another title with a triple meaning.
So Far To Go - I think the most beautiful thing is if you like a certain of music is to share it with the person you love. Sometimes I would put on an album and let the romance settle in, also if you really don't get this last one listen to the song J Dilla - So Far To Go. Thank you for your time.
