"Frozen in Time"

An image from an early season excursion deep into the snowy High Sierra backcountry.

I chose my route and destinations on this trip carefully because I knew that only a few lakes in the Sierra would still be frozen. I was thrilled to find several on my route, and I was able to shoot a few of them. There’s something about this lake basin that really caught my eye…even for the High Sierra, my home away from home, it felt different, more open, almost like the surface of another planet. It was completely barren, with nothing but snow and rocks to shape the scene…but, damn, it was one stunning scene.

There were only two other sets of footprints in the snow heading up to this location, and I met the people who made them…so I think it’s safe to say I’m one of the first people of the year to make the trek up here! The solitude was so profound, almost eerie…but I had been looking for a great escape from the city that weekend, and could have asked for nothing more.
